8. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe / CS Lewis

(Approx. 85 million copies)

This is a relatively new book – published “only” in 1950 and was the first in a series of adventure books that are beloved by children to this day. The year is 1940, and with the threat of the Blitz on London, the children Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are sent to an old house in a village, where the young Lucy discovers the magical world of Narnia in a closet.

But Narnia is not only a refuge from the horrors of war – but also a place in great trouble that only the four children who came from another world can save.
